I am the white elephant in the room...
I started this blog because after being diagnosed Bipolar and A.D.H.D, I shared that information with certain family members and this is what happened:
My sisters laughed at me, and cracked jokes.
My aunt prayed for me.
My daughter embraced me and has become my biggest supporter
My youngest son thinks I'm crazy.
My mom simply acted as if I said absolutely nothing, we've never talked about it again and if I try she changes the subject.
Mental illness is a taboo subject in African American families and our culture. It's the dirty little secret, the white elephant in the room. Well, I can't keep this secret any longer and I'm tired of the stigma that's attached to mental illness. We are people, living out our own definitions of normal. Don't slap a "crazy" sticker on us and lock us away.
I am chemically imbalanced, I can't help that so don't judge me because of it.
Help me shed light on the darkness that overtake us, so you'll know when we need help.
